Unschooling
And, as Mitchell Stevens shows in Kingdom of Children, his readable sociological survey of the movement, they include the needs of many American women, mostly conservative Christians, whose beliefs do not permit them to work outside the

In a 1995 study of home educators the sociologist Maralee Mayberry found that 84 percent believed the Bible was literally true, 78 percent said they went to church at least once a week, and 98 percent were white.

Conservative Christians have become the new counterculture, far more vital than what remains of the 1960s version, and home schooling is their most successful alternative institution.

Stevens, a professor of sociology at Hamilton College, spent ten years interviewing home-schooling families, watching them teach, pitching tents at

"Love is spelled T-I-M-E," as one home-schooling family's Web site puts it. "We give ourselves to our children while they are young and need our instruction ... By the time they complete the high school years they are firmly anchored in GOD'S WORD, and have learned to stand against the world."

Christian home schoolers are "refreshingly explicit about the human costs of raising children," Stevens found. "They devote considerable energy to explaining why children 'need' full-time mothers, and they also are careful to celebrate the doing of that work." (The unschoolers, in contrast, tended to celebrate the creativity of the child over the labors of the mother.)

Indeed, in a study conducted a few years ago the sociologists Christian Smith and David Sikkink found that home-schooling families are actually more enmeshed in their communities than public school families. They a

If the rest of us (people nursing vague beefs with the public schools, people without a powerful religious or ideological justification) started pulling our kids out of the schools, I doubt it would serve any social good at all.

Of course, one might argue that the home schoolers' activism is too narrow and self-interested to count as social capital. But that may be too narrow a way of thinking. As Smith and Sikkink argue,

American democracy thrives on the widespread participation of its citizens in a host of different kinds of associations that mediate between the individual and the state, often even when those associations are not manifestly political or liberal ... [T]he experience of association and participation itself tends to socialize, empower, and incorporate citizens in ways that stimulate democratic self- government, even if they involve some particularity and conflict in the process.

This is the third and final volume of A System of Pragmatic Idealism, a series that will synthesize the life's work of the philosopher Nicholas Rescher.

I called and ordered my GRE scores-- I'm not sure where my copy will be sent... maybe I will check the web site.
Verbal: 660 93%
Quantitative: 710 76%
Analytical: 550 47%
Psychology: 780 99%
I spent $29 on that call....

In spite of taking these tests without preparing specifically for the GRE, I did well on the psychology subject exam.

Sometime, I will try to determine

1-888-GRE SCORE (1-888-473-7267)

was the date 9/97? - I need help finding gre scores-- were they on unofficial transcript?

What schools should I apply to?

First, let's work on our research paper and see what happens, then, in about 3 months (end of march, beginning of april, we'll ask this question again). Columbia, Berkeley, NYU (bleah), I don't really care, to be honest. An olympic sized pool, easy access to dbs and libraries. Though I do also need people.

regarding the research, how to balance learning the background with making progress on my own idea, with making progress on the applied aspect of encouraging dreaming, and evaluating the effects of doing so? Let's create different assignments and different levels of research projects. Furthermore, it is clear that few people will take you seriously (including yourself) if your theory does not have relation to other people's daily life besides your own.

It's 6:10 let's take a break and then ponder this...

we shouldn't stay later than 7:30

snakegirl-- beverly is doing something currently in demand, that has an audience. She has done talks, etc, impressive. What is wondering is that my situation impressed her. Well, sometime, it will impress me, perhaps by how it impresses others.

how to balance learning the background with making progress on my own idea, with making progress on the applied aspect of encouraging dreaming, and evaluating the effects of doing so?

(1) Learning background is easy, simply reading the books, to some extent. Learning background as it relates to an idea is more involved.

(2) Defining an idea is challenging

(3) developing and testing an intervention is perhaps the hariest of all (though writing about it could be more so).

Let's concentrate on 2 & 3, and work on a framework for 2 & 3 that can be filled in by background research.

let's get started! perhaps in word.
